Biography

Lizzie Churchill Allen was born March 31, 1885 in Westport, Massachusetts, to Asa Bodfish and Emma L. Allen (née Manchester). She was an amateur mycologist and an active member of the Boston Mycological Club. Allen never married and lived with her parents in Westport. She died on July 29, 1956, in Bedford, Massachusetts, and is buried at the Westport Point Cemetery.

Series Description

The collection is divided into two series. Series I - Watercolors. Eight portfolios of watercolors of fungi arranged alphabetically by Latin name. Series II - Notes. This series contains notes, keys, indexes, correspondence, and photographs of fungi.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains watercolors, photographs, notes, correspondence, and reprints pertaining to Allen's interest in mycology. There are eight portfolios of watercolor illustrations of fungi, a box of notes describing fungi, primarily the genera Lactarius and Russula, photographs of fungi, reprints of articles about Russula, and one letter from Edward Thompson Harper.
