Biography

Charles Bullard was born in Somerville, Massachusetts, on August 5, 1869. He attended Somerville High School and graduated from Harvard in 1896. He was an assistant to William Gilson Farlow for many years. Bullard spent most of his life in Cambridge and never married. He joined the New England Botanical Club in 1921 and was an active member until his death on February 3, 1960.
In 1959 Bullard's sister, Katherine, gave almost $1.5 million to Harvard University to endow a professorship and fund research in forestry and neurology. The Charles Bullard Professorship of Forestry, Charles Bullard Fund for Forest Research, and the Stephen Bullard Memorial Fund at Harvard Medical School were created.

Scope and Content

This collection consists of drawings of algae as seen through a microscope with handwritten descriptions. The drawings were made primarily between 1915 and 1921. Some of the specimens illustrated by Bullard were collected by other botanists, but most Bullard collected himself between 1892 and 1912. Most of the specimens were collected in New England, but specimens from Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, Washington, and Wisconsin and from New Brunswick and Ontario, Canada, are also represented.
