Biographical / Historical

Hannah Tillich was born Johanna Werner in Rothenburg, Germany on May 19, 1896. She was an art teacher and a poet. She married Albert Gottschow in 1920 and they were divorced two years later. In 1924, she married Paul Tillich and they were together until his death in 1965. Hannah Tillich wrote two memoirs of her marriage with Paul Tillich: From Time to Time (1973) and From Place to Place: Travels With Paul Tillich, Travels Without Paul Tillich (1976). She also wrote poetry and a novel entitled Harbor Mouse (1978). She died on Long Island, New York in 1988.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of biographical material on Hannah Tillich, including birth, marriage, and citizenship documents. There is also correspondence with theologians and colleagues, as well as condolence letters and telegrams on the death of Paul Tillich. The collection also contains writings, including drafts of her memoirs, From Time to Time and From Place to Place: Travels With Paul Tillich, Travels Without Paul Tillich, and poems, diary excerpts, and dreams. Finally, the collection also contains photographs and an article for Hannah Tillich's 80th birthday celebration.
