Biographical / Historical

Stanley Manning (1883-1967) was born in New York City, New York. He graduated from Lombard College and Ryder Seminary in 1905. He received his STB degree from Hartford Seminary in 1935, and an honorary degree from St. Lawrence University in 1941. Manning was ordained a Universalist minister in 1905 by the Georgia Universalist Convention. He served as minister in Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Maine, Connecticut, and Illinois; and as minister emeritus at Galesburg and Avon, Illinois. Manning was a member of the Universalist Church of America Board of Trustees, 1943-1951, and secretary of five Universalist conventions. He was also superintendent of the Maine Universalist Convention, 1924-1933; president of the Young People's Christian Union (YPCU); and the director of Young People's Work. Manning also co-authored, along with his wife, Ethel Manning, George Seeks a Reason (1929).

Scope and Contents

This series is divided into four series. Series I is biographical material, such as correspondence, clippings, and notes. Series II consists of office files, arranged alphabetically by topic. Series III is manuscripts, arranged alphabetically by title. Series IV contains sermons given by Manning. They comprise the bulk of this collection and are arranged chronologically. Many of the sermons were preached on more than one date and location, but only the original date and location are listed below.
