Nathaniel Thayer (July 11, 1769-June 23, 1840) was born in Hampton, New Hampshire, the son of Rev. Ebenezer Thayer. Nathaniel Thayer's maternal grandfather was the Rev. John Cotton of Newton, MA (b. 1694). Thayer graduated from Harvard College in 1789, and was also a tutor at Harvard from 1792-1793. He married Sarah Toppan on October 22, 1795, and the couple had eight children. Thayer was ordained junior pastor of the church (a Congregational meeting house) in Lancaster, MA on October 9, 1793, and served as minister in Lancaster for forty-seven years.
