There are no restrictions on access to this collection, with the exception of the membership nomination forms which are restricted for fifty years from the date of creation.

Biographical / Historical

The American Society for the Study of Religion was established in 1959 as a learned society for the study of religion, with the assistance and support of the American Council of Learned Societies. Past presidents include Erwin Goodenough, Mircea Eliade, and Joseph Campbell.

Scope and Contents

Collection includes correspondence, minutes, newsletters, and programs. Some of the programs for annual meetings include transcripts of talks and memorial minutes for deceased members of the ASSR. There are also legal documents, attendance records, reports, lists of officers, and the institutional constitution and bylaws.
