Biographical / Historical

Reginald H. Helfferich (1905-1981) graduated from Ursinus College in 1928 and the Theological Seminary of the University of Chicago in 1932. He served as pastor of Christ Evangelical and Reformed Church in Bath, England; and the Northeast Pennsylvania Synod of the United Church of Christ, the fifth generation of his family to do so. He served as executive secretary of the Commission on World Service; general secretary of the United Church Board for World Ministries; vice president of the Meals for Millions Foundation; and board chairman and founder of the Heifer International Foundation from 1949 to 1975. He made several trips to Albert Schweitzer's hospital in Lambarene, Africa, and brought donations from his church there. In 1961, Germany awarded him the Commander's Cross of the Order Merit, their government's highest decoration. Helfferich is also the co-editor, along with Asa K. McIlhaney, of Doorways and Dormers: In the Shadow of the Blue Mountain (1937).
