Universalists in Brighton organized to support Universalist preaching in 1857. Rev. Sumner Ellis was appointed to preach in 1858. Services were held in Union Hall. The parish was organized in 1860. The Church of the Redeemer was dedicated on August 7, 1861. The parish became defunct around 1888 , and its building was used by Unity Church (Unitarian) until 1905.
