Clifford Richmond Stetson (1891-1963) was born in Whitingham, Vermont. He graduated from the St. Lawrence Theological School in 1918 and was ordained to the Universalist ministry in Rutland, Vermont, that same year. He served pastorates in Rutland, Springfield, and Derbyline, Vermont; Old Town, Maine; and Middleport, New York. He was named minister emeritus of the Springfield Unitarian Universalist Church in 1963. From 1922 to 1933, he was assigned to the Universalist Japanese Mission in Shidzuoka, Japan.
Organized into the following series:
- Series I. Correspondence
- Series II. Photographs
- Series III. Personal material
This collection is divided into three series. Series I consists of photocopies of Stetson's outgoing correspondence, which is arranged chronologically. Most of these letters could more aptly be described as reports as they are not addressed to specific individuals, though Stetson did write the names of the individuals to whom the reports were sent on the first page of each report. Most of them describe Stetson's experiences in Japan, and they were published in 1976 by Rev. Stetson's wife, Margaret Stetson, in Letters Written By The Rev. Clifford Stetson: Universalist Missionary in Japan, 1922-1933. Series II consists of photographs and includes albums of photographs taken in Japan and Korea. Series III contains personal material.
