Biographical / Historical

The Soldiers' Memorial Society was a non-denominational organization, led principally by Unitarians, established in 1865 to preserve the memory of Massachusetts soldiers who served in the Civil War and to engage in humanitarian and educational work in the South. Many of the members of the Soldiers' Memorial Society were promient Bostonians, such as Edward Everett Hale, who served as secretary of the organization.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of official records, financial and supply records, reports, and committee records. There is also a fair amount of correspondence, much of which is addressed to Edward Everett Hale, arranged chronologically.
