Processing Information:

This collection originally was organized as two separate collections (Mss:724 1890-1945 R187 and Mss:725 1920-1945 R187). The material seems to have been separated based on the type of transportation industry; steam railroads (:724) and electrical railroads (:725). The material has been brought together and series have been created to highlight the differences.

The material is arranged by states with some materials located in multiple boxes. Material prior to 1945 is further arranged by type of industry, Series I. Electric railroads and Series II. Steam railroads. After 1945, the material is combined and represented in Series III.

Scope and Contents

Letters, maps, and time tables received yearly from railroad and electric lines by Rand McNally & Company regarding changes in routes, for inclusion in atlases. Maps are often included. Electric lines are filed with steam railroads after 1945; before that they are kept separate.
