Biographical Note:

Edward Collins Bursk was a member of the Harvard Business School faculty and editor of the Harvard Business Review (HBR). He graduated from Amherst College in 1928 and a year later received his A.M. (Master of Arts) from Harvard University. In 1941, he joined the faculty of the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration (HBS) as an instructor and became a full professor in 1954. In addition to teaching, Bursk joined the Harvard Business Review in 1943 as Managing Editor. He was promoted to Editor in 1947 and would maintain this position until his retirement in 1971.
Bursk edited several volumes on business drawn from articles previously published in HBR, authored several books including Getting Things Done, and served as moderator of the innovative eight-part program "Marketing on the Move," a weekly television program co-sponsored by Harvard and WGBH featuring business leaders and HBS faculty. Most notably he oversaw the growth of the Harvard Business Review's circulation from 2,000 to over 100,000. In addition to his teaching and editorial responsibilities, Bursk also served on numerous business councils and boards, and founded the International Marketing Institute of which he became the Education Director. Bursk died in 1990.

Scope and Content Note:

The Edward C. Bursk Papers span from 1942 to 1974. The materials primarily document his teaching work and include cases and related teaching notes, correspondence about the development of specific cases, and materials used for grading. Of particular interest are several cases used in the teaching of Army Supply Officers during World War II. There are also newspaper clippings from his period as editor of the Harvard Business Review, detailing his work and publications. The collection is organized into three series: I. Correspondence II. Notes on Cases, and III. Biographical Information.
