Abstract: This collection contains customs documents, correspondence, and United States Treasury Department circulars sent to the Marblehead Custom House, dated from 1789 to 1878. Included are vessel documents for American ships and letters regarding registration and licensing, import and export duties, smuggling, and commodities brought into Marblehead. The circulars mainly relay news of Congressional acts that affected maritime trade.

Historical Note:

The United States established Custom House districts under the jurisdiction of the Treasury Department in 1789. The ports of Lynn and Marblehead, Massachusetts were combined into one district, with the Custom House operating at Marblehead. Customs collectors were tasked with charging import and export duties, transferring bounties on goods to the Treasury Department, issuing vessel documents like certificates of enrollment, license, and registration to ship masters, and recording tonnage.
