Biographical Note:

John G. McLean received an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1940. Upon his graduation he remained at HBS as a research assistant. In 1941, he served as an Instructor and later as an Assistant and then Associate Professor until 1945. In 1954, McLean was granted a full professorship and became a permanent member of the Harvard Business School faculty. During the early 1950s while at HBS, McLean, along with Robert William Haigh, authored The Growth of Integrated Oil Companies. The book was published in 1954. In 1956, McLean left HBS to become Vice-President at Continental Oil. He became President of the company in 1969. John McLean served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Continental Oil Company until his passing in 1974

The collection is arranged in the following series:

Scope and Content Note:

The collection documents Professor John G. McLean's research, consulting and teaching while at Harvard Business School. The bulk of the collection relates to research and writing for a study entitled, The Growth of Integrated Oil Companies, which spans from 1920 to 1954. The collection includes McLean's correspondence with the various oil companies that were part of the study; and original charts and data gathered and used for the study. Additionally, the collection includes chapter outlines and a bound copy of the finished study.
The collection also includes materials related to Professor McLean's work as a consultant for various companies including Polaroid. Much of this consulting work was done in partnership with other HBS faculty including Kenneth R. Andrews, Robert N. Anthony, and Albert Smith, Jr. The collection covers McLean's consulting activities from 1948 to 1955. There are a few teaching files related to a course entitled, "Advanced Production Problems" from 1948 to 1957.
