This autograph collection was part of the same accession as the Baker family papers, however, given the nature of the materials and because it was strictly an autograph collection amassed by George E. Baker, the decision was to made to give this collection a separate record.

Scope and Content Note:

The George Ellis Baker autograph collection consists of letters, documents and autographs of famous European and American politicians, writers, military leaders and intellectuals. Included are personal letters sent directly to Baker and signatures purchased and collected by Baker. Also included in this collection are letters addressed to Secretary of State, William Henry Seward. Baker served as private secretary to Seward during the 1860s. The bulk of the material in this autograph collection are autograph signed letters of politicians and intellectuals from the state of New York including senators, congressmen, mayors and governors. There are also autograph signed letters of famous European politicians and writers.
