Abstract: This collection consists of albumen prints that depict businesses, business blocks, wharves and harbor views, hotels and taverns, libraries, halls, churches, and residences in mid to late nineteenth century Boston, Massachusetts.

Gift of Mrs. Charles W. Parker, Mrs. Henry Taggard, Herman Parker, Ross Parker, and Charles S. Parker in memory of Charles Wallingford Parker, ca. 1928.

Processing Note:

The collection was processed as part of the Historical Collections manuscript photograph project. The photographs were formerly part of the large PM (Pictures of Manufacturing) and PG (Pictures Geographic) files. The common provenance of the bulk of the photographs was discovered during processing—most of the images were labeled "Gift of Mrs. Charles W. Parker… in memory of Charles Wallingford Parker." Several other nineteenth-century Boston views were also added to the collection. The photographs were arranged by subject and by size and placed in acid-free folders and boxes.

Scope and Content Note:

This collection consists of fifty-one albumen prints that depict businesses, business blocks, wharves and harbor views, hotels and taverns, libraries, halls, churches, and residences in Boston, Massachusetts. The photographs date from 1855 to 1895. Nine photographs show the damage caused during Boston's Great Fire of 1872. The collection also includes a group portrait of the National Typographical Union taken in 1859. The prints are arranged by subject and size (ranging from 4.25 x 6.5 inches to 13.25 x 19 inches.)
