From April-June 1814,Samuel Kittredge Brooks,ofBoston, Massachusettspurchased sheep, theater tickets, had two teeth filled, traveled from Boston to New York to Albany to Saratoga Springs and back to Boston via Springfield. He gave money to his sister,Mrs. Betsey Brooks. During those months, his income detrived from his speculation in flour and sheep, store rent, and interest on notes.
Collection consists of one volume inscribed "Book No. 2. S. K. Brooks 1814", detailing expenses and receipts. Entries give date, description of goods or services purchased, and amount. Volume divided into four parts: expense accounts, day book, cash, and State Bank in a/c current with Samuel K. Brooks. Names mentioned in the volume include Betsey Brooks, Charles Brooks, Asaph Stone, David Taylor,Leonard Jarvis,Isaac Brooks, Jonathan Brooks, Charles Hall, Charles Barton, Samuel Dillaway. Last page has poem written in pencil: "To check disease beyond the power of art...".
