This collection was given to the Arnold Arboretum Library by Sarah C. Sears in July 1917. Previous ownership is unknown. What appears to be a price of £10.10 is penciled on the endpapers preceding the table of contents in volume I.

Biographical note

William Withers, Jr. lived in the town of Holt, Norfolk, England, and owned and leased at least two nearby forest plantations from around 1811 to 1842. His published works include letters and treatises on the establishment and maintenance of forest plantations.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of two bound volumes of correspondence and printed material entitled, "Tracts and Letters on Planting. Authors copies of tracts bound up with the letters that he received from correspondents, the printed matter inlaid, and the whole arranged in (mostly) chronological order."
Vol. I. August 1826-November 1827 Contains correspondence to Withers and four items authored by Withers: one letter to W.M. Cobbett Esq. (printed by Holt), "Memoir on Forest Trees," and two versions of "Table of Planting Profits + Losses."
Vol. II. November 1827-December 1828 Contains correspondence to Withers and one letter from Withers to Sir Walter Scott, Baronet (printed by Holt).
