Under the leadership of Richard Howard the Arnold Arboretum served as an International Registration Authority and a National Registration Authority for 8 years, working with the AHS and the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboretums (AABGA). Arnold Arboretum is the IRA for several woody plant genera. Donald Wyman, Horticulturist of the Arnold Arboretum from 1935 to 1969, served as AHS President in 1960-1961.

Scope and Contents

The collection includes the correspondences of members of the International Commission for the Nomenclature of Cultivated Plants (ICNCP). The ICNCP drafted a nomenclature code in October of 1952 and members of this commission continued to discuss improvements to the code in the coming years. The goal of the ICNCP was to establish uniformity for the naming of cultivars. The bulk of the collection contains correspondences and documents that pertain to the registration of national and international cultivar names. These issues were discussed at the annual meeting of the International Horticultural Congress. A bulk of the materials is correspondences. Other materials include: memorandums, reports, research materials, meeting minutes, brochures and financial records.
